Singing belongs to one who loves

In honour of Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music and musicians, we recognize the important contribution that music makes to our lives in lifting up our spirits or in helping us to be in touch with our deepest emotions. After all, when we acknowledge how we feel, we are able to pray well and connect with God. St. Augustine says, "Singing belongs to one who loves."

So we are curious, what's on your playlist these days? Share in the comments box below (leave a reply) and inspire us to discover music that can lift souls! Need not to stick with sacred or religious music alone if you have found some secular music that has helped you during tough times.

One song that carried me through the hard times is "We cannot measure how you heal." This hymn have brought in me such grace and peace, to be carried by his loving hands through good times and bad, through uncertainties and intense grief. Thank you Lord!
https://youtu.be/ygeK4XorRm4

"We cannot measure how You heal
or answer every sufferer’s prayer,
yet we believe your grace responds
where faith and doubt unite to care.
Your hands, though bloodied on the cross,
survive to hold and heal and warn,
to carry all through death to life
and cradle children yet unborn."

Whenever I had a difficult time, right away I started singing the psalm "Be with me Lord, when I'm in trouble, be with me Lord, I pray." Simple but powerful.

A secular song that made me feel not so alone is Somewhere out there - Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram

"Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight
Someone's thinking of me and loving me tonight
Somewhere out there someone's saying a prayer
That we'll find one another in that big somewhere out there"

I have ALWAYS loved this song. It is based on Psalm 139. It has gotten me through a lot of difficult moments and made me remember that God never leaves my side and that I am truly in His hands. I hope you enjoy it and it touches you too.

I also "love" the song, PARABLE by M.D. Ridge. It just brings faith right back down to grass roots. It is just so perfect and reminds me how I need to act as a disciple of Jesus, my Lord, my God, my Saviour for whom I cannot live without. Hope you enjoy this one too!

Recently I have been listening to The Summons by John L. Bell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPXq_KrUBFU) to be reminded of the great blessing and responsibility of discipleship.

Approaching Advent and heading for Christmas, there are two songs that keep playing over and over again inside my head. They are “Sion’s Daughter” and “Transeamus” by Josef Ignaz Schnnabel.

In this time of the year (pre-pandemic), these two songs would definitely appear on top of our choir ‘practice list’

Transeamus usque Bethlehem et
videamus hoc verbum quod factum est.
Mariam et Joseph et Infantem
positum in praesepio,

(Chorus:)
Gloria in excelsis Deo
et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.

Transeamus
Videamus multitudinem militiae celestis
laudantium Deum,
Mariam et Joseph et Infantem
positum in praesipio
et videamus quod factum est,

I love, love, love this song. It's called IN THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD by MICHAEL PHILIP WARD. I remember the first time I heard it was at Easter. I don't even remember how I heard it. I just know that I did. I even ordered the sheet music and when I play it, I play it quite faster in certain places, and it just moves me. I just love this song. I can just picture it in my mind. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

This song by Steven Curtis Chapman "I will be here" - although it's meant to be sung by a couple to each other, it feels so much like a representative of the love God have for us. So beautiful... https://youtu.be/Ed6eAXcr-K8

I love music from the fifties and sixties, and right now I am listening to gospel songs by Elvis Presley, very calming.

Perhaps it's early, but I've started listening to Christmas Carols (the traditional old Christian ones, not the gimmicky secular ones) as they always give me some cheer and bring my thoughts to Christ

I listen to Classic FM, live-streamed from the UK
John Williams‘ Hymn to the Fallen (Saving Private Ryan) is especially moving for me for many reasons
Also love Bach Cantatas, Wachet Auf being my favourite

On replay in our home is the Divine Mercy Chaplet by Francesca LaRosa, Phil Wickham's Battle Belongs, and anything Matt Maher! So grateful for music that aids us in prayer, and teaches our children His Love and Beauty through it!

Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. The song spoke about authoring our own life and allowing ourselves to be authentic since nobody else could feel what we feel, speak what we speak, or think what we think.

Audrey Assad and Casting Crowns are my go-to contemporary Christian musicians:
I Shall Not Want by Audrey Assad
Lead Kindly Light by Audrey Assad
Oh My Soul by Casting Crowns

May all these songs lift your spirit, like them to mine.

I have been going to the albums by Jay and Jo on Spotify. Some of their songs talk about the ache of not yet being home through out our time on earth and I find them soothing.

I listen to a wide variety of music, but one artist I listen to often is Peter Kater, for his piano-based instrumental songs which, for me, are perfect for reading and reflection.

The Lord hears the cry of the poor.
In reply, Here I am O Lord.
How?
Use the prayer of St. Francis: When I was hungry....
When?
While we still have a material body.
Why?
Yeshua ben Mary said so.

"You are Loved" by Josh Groban - imagining Christ singing these lyrics to me has brought me great comfort, support & joy. Friends thought the same & played it at their mom's funeral.

"Light for the World" -The Poor Clare Sisters Arundel album. Everything soothing, uplifting & inspiring found somewhere on this album.

Two in particular. Sheep May Safely Graze by J S Bach because the music is soothing nd even the title suggests peace and calm.
Also, He Ain't Heavy... He's My Brother by Neil Diamond because it reminds us to he mindful of others and seek to help them.

'Lord of my Life' by Matt Maher is such a beautiful anthem of faith and a reminder to surrender it all especially during times of anxiety and uncertainty.

"Mercies never failing
Forgiveness overflowing
The beauty You're unveiling
A love that just keeps growing
This is all I want
I surrender all"

I'm an avid collector and lover of authentic African Music: traditional and popular dance music. I have shared African Music with many in this city and beyond.
The clean sound of African drums, the rhythmic sounds of acoustic and as well as the riffing sounds of electric guitars, often accompanied with enchanting sounds of horns and a host of other traditional music instruments lives one wholly energized and refreshed and wanting more after a good dance or simply listening to a soukous music: the best of which comes from the people of the Congo. A cornerstone and a pillar of modern African Music.

All the same, having been a choir member all my youthful years, most of which was spent living in Lodonga Catholic Parish, which today hosts the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary, my favourite spiritual music is the, "ALMA MATER". Music from the Vatican. Featuring the voice of POPE BENEDICT XVI. Simply magnificent. The DVD is quite extraordinary. It will live you breathless.

"How he loves "
David Crowder

And He is jealous for me.
Love's like a hurricane. I am a tree,
Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy.

When all of a sudden,
I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory.
And I realize just how beautiful You are,
And how great Your affections are for me.

And, oh, how He loves us, oh.
Oh, how He loves us.
How He loves us, oh.

Yeah, He loves us.
Oh, how He loves us.
Oh, how He loves us.
Oh, how He loves.

And we are His portion and He is our prize,
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes.
If His grace is an ocean, we're all sinking.

And Heaven meets earth like an unforeseen kiss.
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest.
I don't have time to maintain these regrets,
When I think about the way...

That He loves us.
Oh, how He loves us.
Oh, how He loves us.
Oh, how He loves.

Yeah, He loves us.
Oh, how He loves us.
Oh, how He loves us.
Oh, how He loves.

Yeah, He loves us.
Oh, how He loves us.
Oh, how He loves us.
Oh, how He loves.

I can live
I can love
I can reach the heavens above
I can write was is wrong
I can sing just any song
I can dance, I can fly
and touch the rainbow in the sky
I can be your good friend
I can love you until the end.
