For families, knowing that a priest is available when a loved one is seriously ill can be a tremendous source of peace. One parishioner shared her gratitude after her mother received the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick and a blessing before she passed away:

“Words can’t express how grateful I was to know that mom received the anointing of the sick and blessing before she passed away from chaplain. Thank you, Lord!”

​Behind every number is a person, a patient, a family member, a moment of fear or uncertainty, and an opportunity for the Church to bring Christ’s mercy and consolation.

Fifty years ago, Sr. Gerardine "Ger" Curran, fcJ, and Sr. Patricia "Trish" Binchy, fcJ, professed their vows as Faithful Companions of Jesus in Laurel Hill Limerick. Ireland. With grateful hearts, Many friends relatives and Community members joined in celebrating this remarkable milestone and giving thanks for their generous response to God's call.

Through five decades of religious life, both Sr. Ger and Sr. Trish have embodied the FCJ charism with faith, courage, wisdom, and compassion. Their lives have been a witness to God's faithful love and a source of blessing for countless people across communities, ministries, and nations.

Sr. Ger spent many years of devoted service in education, counselling, spiritual accompaniment, interfaith dialogue, refugee support, and leadership within the FCJ community in Calgary. These ministries evidenced compassionate presence, attentive listening, and steadfast commitment to others have touched many lives. Even during these past years of medical leave, her witness of faith and trust continues to inspire all who are part of her life.

Sr. Trish, has offered generous service in education, pastoral ministry, and leadership throughout the FCJ Society across many countries and cultures. Her wisdom, deep faith, and gift for guiding others have enriched the lives of countless people. We rejoice in your ministry and in the hope you continue to bring as General Superior.
 
As these Golden Jubilees were celebrated, God was thanked for their enduring "yes", a yes renewed day after day through prayer, service, companionship, and love. Your lives remind us that God continues to work through generous hearts that are open to the needs of the world.

May the God who called you and has walked faithfully with you through these fifty years continue to bless you with peace, joy, strength, and abundant grace. May you know how deeply appreciated and loved you are by all whose lives you have touched.

St. Luke’s Church was filled with Stampede spirit on Sunday, July 12, 2026, as part of our parish renewal in being a Church of encounter and witness. Our parish, after a seven-year break, brought back our annual Stampede Pancake and Sausage Breakfast for the first time since 2019. 

The parking lot was packed, and many had to park in the adjacent school parking lot. This was an indoor event, so we were not affected by the weather. In celebration of our city’s western heritage, many parishioners were dressed in western attire, wearing fancy cowboy hats, boots, and statement belt buckles.

August 6, 2026 - Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, and it could not have been a more fitting day for our pilgrimage.

As every day on this journey, we began with the celebration of the Holy Mass, with Bishop Scott McCaig presiding. Before we started our engines, we first gathered around the altar. It is there that we receive the strength for the miles ahead.

As I rode through the breathtaking landscapes today, a simple thought kept returning to me: every pilgrimage is, in some way, a journey of transformation. We often think of reaching a destination, but perhaps God is more interested in what happens to us along the way.

Being surrounded by the beauty of God's creation invites silence and reflection. The mountains, forests, waterfalls, and endless roads have a way of slowing the heart and making room for God to speak. Little by little, I realized that this pilgrimage is not only about visiting the churches; it is also about allowing the Lord to transform us.

That transformation happens through prayer, through the intentions you have entrusted to us, and through the many people we meet along the road. Every prayer reminds us that we are carrying much more than luggage on our motorcycles. We are carrying your hopes, your worries, your gratitude, and your faith.

At the same time, your intentions are changing us as well. They teach us to be grateful for every new day, every person we encounter, and yes, even every cross we have to carry. Last year I learned that some of those crosses can be quite heavy. This year I am simply grateful to still be riding.

Of course, not every transformation is dramatic. Sometimes it is as simple as learning that after eight hours on a motorcycle, you discover muscles you never knew existed! And somehow, every evening we all insist that we are "not tired at all" while moving like men who are about ninety years old. By God's grace, however, the next morning we climb back on our motorcycles, smile at one another, and do it all again.

Perhaps that is one more lesson of the Transfiguration: God rarely changes us all at once. He transforms us one prayer, one conversation, one kilometre, and sometimes one sore back at a time.

Thank you for allowing us to carry your intentions. Please continue to pray for us, as we continue to pray for you. May this pilgrimage become a journey of transformation not only for those of us on the road, but also for everyone who is travelling with us in spirit.

After all, motorcycles eventually stop... but the transformation God begins in our hearts is meant to last forever.

August 2, 2026 - Today was a special day on our pilgrimage. It is Sunday, the Lord's Day. While we travel thousands of kilometres on motorcycles, the true heart of our pilgrimage is not the road but the Eucharist. Every day finds its meaning in prayer, and every Sunday finds its centre at the altar.

Today we celebrated Holy Mass in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable: a stunning vineyard in the hills of British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. Bishop Scott presided at the celebration, and it was difficult to imagine a more fitting place to worship God. Surrounded by vineyards, mountains, and the quiet beauty of creation, we were reminded of Jesus' words: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower." (John 15:1)

During the Mass, we entrusted to the Lord all the prayer intentions you have sent us before and during this pilgrimage. Each intention travels with us, not only in our saddlebags, but more importantly, in our hearts. Thank you for trusting us with your prayers. They remind us that this pilgrimage is about much more than visiting churches or riding beautiful roads. It is a journey of faith, hope, and carrying one another before God.

As we looked across the vineyards and the beauty of the Okanagan Valley, we were reminded once again that every road, when travelled with Christ, leads us closer to Him. Thank you for walking this pilgrimage with us through your prayers. Please know that we continue to remember you at every Mass, every shrine, and every stop along the way.

​May God bless you abundantly, and may the Lord of every journey keep you safe.

One of the highlights of the second annual Marian Week in the Rockies is its series of daily talks, inviting pilgrims to deepen their understanding of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the richness of the Catholic faith. Held daily from August 17–21 at 12:00 p.m., these presentations offer an opportunity to reflect, learn, and grow alongside fellow pilgrims in the beautiful setting of Banff and Canmore.

Marian Week begins with the celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday, August 15 at 5:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Parish in Banff, with Mass celebrated by Bishop William T. McGrattan. The week concludes with the celebration of the Feast of the Queenship of Mary on Saturday, August 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shrine Church of Our Lady in the Rockies in Canmore, also celebrated by Bishop McGrattan.

Whether you're able to attend a single day or participate throughout the week, Marian Week's flexible format allows you to build your own pilgrimage experience. Alongside the daily talks, participants can also take part in the week's regular rhythm of morning Mass, the Divine Mercy Chaplet at the Shrine Church of Our Lady in the Rockies in Canmore, and evening Mass at St. Mary's Parish in Banff.

This year's speakers will explore Mary from a variety of perspectives:

"There's nothing so horrible that we ever do that God can't take and make beautiful if you just trust and let go."

At 22 years old, Catherine Hendry found herself unexpectedly pregnant, unmarried, and overwhelmed by fear. She didn’t know what to do, or how to face her parents, and wanted to get rid of her problem as quickly as possible. Motivated by this fear and believing there was no other way forward, she had booked an abortion.

The night before the appointment, as she lay awake in bed, she noticed a poster of Jesus crucified hanging on the wall. Printed across it were the words, "I love you."

She had once heard that no matter what situation a person finds themselves in, or how much of a mess they believe they have made of their life, Jesus wants to receive it and help them through it.

Recalling this, and in her despair, Catherine called out to God.

"'Lord, take this problem. What a mess I've made of my life. I was just at my wit's end in despair."

The response came almost immediately.

"As soon as I said, 'Lord, take this problem,' I felt the weight of the world come off my shoulders."

Though she couldn't see what the future would hold, she found herself able to surrender it to God.
"I don't know how You're going to do it, but I trust You."

She later described the experience as though "this elephant just came off of me." In its place came a deep peace and the certainty that God would carry her through whatever lay ahead.

Today, four decades later, Catherine looks back on that moment as the beginning of a life marked by God's faithfulness.

"God has blessed every detail of my pregnancy, of my life's journey, of my daughter," she shared during her testimony at the 2026 Renewal Conference. She eventually married, watched her daughter grow, and experienced God's faithfulness throughout the years.

Reflecting on that journey, one passage of Scripture continues to come to mind: Ephesians 3:20. "To Him who is able to give you more than you could ask for or imagine. Give Him the glory."

For Catherine, the verse is more than a promise; it is a lived reality.

"It's so true. You just got to trust and let go, and amazing things happen. But you really just got to trust Him."

​The Friars and staff at Mount St. Francis Retreat Centre are extending a special invitation to join them in celebrating the Jubilee Year. When Pope Leo declared the Jubilee in January, he invited all the faithful to make a pilgrimage to a site that honours St. Francis.

Event volunteer Jean-Francois Church is excited to have people gather for the day: “How special that our Pope should decree a brand new Jubilee Year, immediately following last year’s Jubilee on Hope. God loves to surprise us with even more grace!” The Jubilee Year celebrates the 800th anniversary of St. Francis’ death. Pope Leo is pointing us to the witness of St. Francis, who brokered peace in the Holy Land, reverenced God in Creation, and preached a life of simplicity and service of those most in need. His example is most relevant for our world today.

Calgary
At the Calgary Correctional Centre and Calgary Remand Centre, volunteers lead weekly chapel programs centred on the Sunday Liturgy of the Word, along with a weekly Rosary, opportunities for Confession, and one-on-one spiritual support for those who request it.

At the Calgary Youth Offender Centre, biweekly faith-sharing sessions provide prayer, mentorship, and reflection for young people. One-on-one spiritual accompaniment is also available for women and youth seeking support.

Lethbridge
At the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, 10 dedicated volunteers provide approximately 510 hours of ministry each year. Their service includes twice-weekly Rosary gatherings, monthly opportunities for Confession, Communion twice a month, one-on-one pastoral care, and seasonal liturgies such as Christmas prayer services and Ash Wednesday services.

Drumheller
Prison ministry at Drumheller Institution continues to develop through the efforts of the pastor of St. Anthony's Parish, who offers the Rosary, Mass, and faith formation. With another priest preparing to assist, the ministry is expected to expand its pastoral care for inmates in both minimum- and medium-security units, bringing greater opportunities for prayer, the sacraments, and spiritual support.

Although he first sensed a call to religious life as a child, his vocation unfolded gradually. While studying in Scotland, his faith deepened through the Catholic Student Union, where Dominican friars introduced him to the Liturgy of the Hours. Back in Canada, he spent 15 years in the federal public service, including serving as Canada's first Ambassador for Religious Freedom, before joining Cardus, where he advocated for religious freedom, conscience rights, Jewish-Christian relations, and combating antisemitism.

His own vocational journey also led him into the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. After transferring from the Roman Catholic Church in 2005, he was ordained a deacon for the Eparchy of Toronto and Eastern Canada in 2017.

Earlier this year, that same openness to God's call led him west.

"The invitation from the Board of Directors at Clear Water Academy... was the third invitation I had received to move to Calgary in the space of two years," Bennett says. "So, I figured that perhaps God was wanting to show me something out west and asking me to take a risk."

This year, with gratitude and renewed hope, I am preparing to continue the journey that remained unfinished.
I do so with greater humility than before. I know that every kilometre is a gift and that every day on the road depends entirely on God's grace. My prayer is simple: if it is God's will, may He allow me to complete this pilgrimage, not for my own satisfaction, but for His glory and for all those whose intentions we have the privilege to carry. Once again, I invite you to become fellow pilgrims.

Please send us your prayer intentions. We will carry them with us to every shrine, every church, every Mass, and every moment of prayer along the way. Whether the journey is smooth or difficult, know that your intentions will remain at the heart of this pilgrimage.

Thank you for your prayers, your friendship, and your faith. Last year, many of you also prayed for my recovery. I believe those prayers strengthened me more than you know.

As we prepare once again to start our engines, may we remember that every Christian life is a pilgrimage. Whether God calls us to move forward with confidence or to wait with patience, every step entrusted to Him leads us closer to Christ.

From July 30 to August 18, a segment of our team will travel thousands of miles by motorcycle through Western Canada and the western United States. We would be honoured to carry your prayer intentions with us, lifting them each day at Mass with Bishop Scott McCaig and I, and remembering them in the rosaries we pray along the open road.

​One year after moving into its own church building, the community of St. John the Apostle Chaldean Catholic Church in Calgary gathered to celebrate a milestone marked by faith, gratitude and renewed parish life.
 
St. John belongs to the Chaldean Catholic Church, one of the Eastern Catholic Churches in full communion with Rome. While the parish is located within the geographical boundaries of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, it is under the pastoral care of the Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of Canada and maintains a close relationship with the local Diocese.

I am not sure who first suggested having a summer barbeque with the Bishop and the Religious/Consecrated men and women of the Diocese of Calgary, but it has become a well-anticipated annual event in June. It always has to coordinate with the Bishop’s busy schedule and be planned months in advance. With great hopes of good weather, we scheduled the event for Tuesday, June 16th this year. Somehow, in the last few years we seemed to pick a rainy day, and we have had to move the supper indoors at the FCJ Christian Life Centre.

This year was no different, despite the sunny beginning of the day, with rain coming to change our plans to an indoor event. The food and the company were wonderful, nevertheless. Along with the barbequed meats that were provided by the Assembly of Women Religious, each community brings some food or beverages to share, which is most generous and appreciated. This way we get to experience a variety of special dishes to complement the barbeque.

This year there was such a good turnout of the Religious/Consecrated that we spilled over into an adjacent room.  At the Bishop’s request, each person introduced himself/herself to the gathering and told something of the role he/she has in the Diocese. A great benefit of the barbeque is that it provides a relaxed opportunity for the men and women in Consecrated Life to spend some quality time together.

So often, we are very involved in our individual works and the life of our communities that we do not experience the presence of other Religious/Consecrated in the Diocese. The annual barbeque gives us an opportunity to welcome newcomers and reconnect with the Bishop and the members of various communities and individuals in Religious/Consecrated Life. The gathering has a welcoming atmosphere where we can enjoy camaraderie and offer encouragement in our various contributions to the Church’s mission of spreading the Kingdom of God. Recently, we have included in these gatherings our diocesan Consecrated Virgin and the candidates for Consecrated Virginity, which is a form of life new to our Diocese.

Our friends and relatives who are in seniors’ homes and care facilities are frequently in our thoughts, but sometimes they are physically distant from us. They may live hours away or perhaps be ‘cognitively far’ if they suffer from dementia. We struggle to connect with them and our frustration can lead to avoidance. However, we have a God-given mandate to visit the ‘imprisoned’, whether they be stuck within the walls of a building or the confines of their minds. And God wants us to accomplish this work with ease not difficulty, with joy not sufferance.
 
Sometimes our reluctance to visit stems from fear of our own future debilitation. Or care homes might resurrect painful memories of loved ones who have passed. However, often it’s simply a case of not knowing what to do or say. So here are some suggestions from people who live and work in a care homes:
 
Short and predictable visits are best
Nicole P., a recreation coordinator, said 30 minutes a week or fortnight is ideal. Val K., a resident agreed. “A physical visit versus a phone call shows that you care enough to come here”, Val said, “It makes us feel a part of something, somebody’s life.” Try to schedule regular visits the same way as you might schedule recreation.
 
Keep it light and positive
Val shared, “some people are afraid they will say the wrong thing, but you can talk about anything, or nothing! It’s not what you say it’s having someone pay attention (to us).” She also recommended playing music for your loved one using your phone. Pro tip: Commercial jingles and classic country are great icebreakers.
 
Be resident focused but not intrusive
Once you get to know the person you are visiting there are several options for further engagement. Nicole suggested going for a walk, outdoors if possible; reading a newspaper article or Chicken Soup story; examining old photographs of the area or even painting the resident’s fingernails or gently massaging lotion onto their hands. Some people crave this form of touch but not everyone does so be alert to body language.
 
Treats are fun
Home baking, Tim’s coffee or flowers from your garden are always welcome. However, both Val and Nicole reiterated that the visit itself is treat enough.
 
Adjust expectations
Don’t be disconcerted if your friend appears sleepy or lethargic, these are common side effects of boredom. Other potential issues are deafness, loss of memory and halting speech. Persevere and you will likely see the person become more active and talkative.
 
Pray ahead of your visit
God longs to bless you, and your elder through you, so that his light may shine in gloomy places. By all means pray with, and for, your friend, but also for yourself so that God’s grace will go with you on your mission of mercy.
 
Think outside the (family) circle
If your family members live too far away for regular check-ins, consider visiting someone who lives close by, perhaps a former parishioner, or neighbour, or a friend of a friend. Think of it as reciprocity towards the people who are visiting your own distant kin.
 
Finally, prepare to be amazed!
Visiting with elders and care home residents can be extremely rewarding in terms of relationships built and faith strengthened. The half hour you spend in company with someone who is lonely can lift both your spirits and make you want to come again.

“Fourteen sisters four years ago,” was the opening announcement at the June 27th gathering of the Seven Sisters Apostolate, “but the number has grown to 52.”  What began as a Legion of Mary project has become a growing apostolate.

​The sisters are lay women who each give an hour a week in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament in prayer for a priest or for our Bishop. It takes seven sisters to pray for an individual priest so that prayers are offered each day of the week. Each group of seven sisters has an anchoress who helps with communication and administration.

When the apostolate began at St. Luke’s Parish in 2022, fourteen women volunteered.  This year, twenty-one women prayed for Bishop William McGrattan – he has three sisters praying for him a day in appreciation for the size of his ministry. The remaining sisters have prayed for Father Paul Raj and Father William Monis of St. Luke’s, and for Father Tomy Manjaly, Father Lawrence Manolache, and Father Cuong Luong.

The Seven Sisters Apostolate is not unique to St. Luke’s Parish, but it is a new endeavour in our diocese.  “Support your priests with your love and prayers, that they may always be shepherds after Christ’s heart,” said Pope Francis. Janette Howe of St. Paul, Minnesota had a similar mission in mind when she first began to offer an hour of prayer at adoration for her local priest in 2010. In gratitude for his work, she hoped that an hour of prayer would support him. With time, her practice grew to include other sisters, and the apostolate began to spread.

All in all, it was an atmosphere of praise and gratitude, and the warmth of the gathering reflected the spirit of parish renewal as these women took concrete action to support their pastors in prayer. The June 27th gathering included Lectio Divina, time for contemplation on the gifts of the apostolate, thanks from two of the pastors and a feast. Each member also received a rose as she committed to continue her role in the apostolate for another year.

​Vanessa Le never imagined she would one day become Catholic or share publicly how Jesus transformed her life. Raised in a family with generations of Buddhist tradition, her journey of faith took a path she never expected. After attending this year’s Renewal Conference, Vanessa felt called to share her story of loss, healing, and spiritual transformation.

“I was born and raised in a strong Buddhist family from many generations,” she said. “My uncle and my dad were monks. My granddad was a Buddhist monk.”

Having come from such a deeply rooted religious background, Vanessa found conversion at first unlikely. It was marriage that eventually led her to join the Catholic Church. She shared that, in the beginning, her faith journey was motivated more by commitment to her spouse than by personal conviction.

“Deep down I did it because of obligation,” she said.

Although she attended Mass regularly, her faith remained largely external. “I went to church every weekend but I didn't do much other than [that].”

Then her life took a painful turn.

When her marriage ended, Vanessa found herself overwhelmed by grief. 

“My marriage didn't work out. I was in despair,” she recalled. “My children got taken away because I did not get full custody.”

The separation from her children left her heartbroken. In one of the most emotional moments of her testimony, Vanessa described the loneliness she experienced during that period.

“I cry in darkness,” she said. “I put their clothing on my face so that I do not miss them that much.”

And in this darkness, she turned to prayer.

“I prayed to Jesus and Mother Mary to please save me,” she said.

In the midst of that pain, Vanessa began to notice moments that slowly drew her closer to God. Vanessa described these moments as individual pieces coming together into a larger picture. These experiences led her to Ascension Parish in Calgary, where she found community, support, and opportunities to deepen her faith.

A particularly significant moment came through a homily delivered by Father Adrien Martens. During his sermon, he encouraged parishioners to pray a simple prayer:

Vanessa embraced this prayer wholeheartedly.

“After I heard that, I prayed every time that I had a chance, and that was it,” she said.

Through this prayer, she experienced a profound sense of God's presence in her life. And today, faith is no longer something she practices out of obligation, but has become the center of her daily life.

“If I don't have a day of Jesus, I miss it,” she shared. “I purposely drive by my church just to see that Jesus is there.”

Her testimony reflected a deep conviction that Christ’s love carried her through some of the most difficult moments she has faced. “My life would not be here if I hadn't had Jesus’ love,” she said. Today, Vanessa says she can't speak about Jesus without becoming emotional.

"Every time I talk about him, I cry," she said. "Because he's my Saviour."

For 25 years, Mission Mexico has been a testament to the faith and generosity of the people of Calgary, reaching out to the poorest of the poor with compassion, hope, and charity. Since 2000, the Diocese's outreach in Guerrero, Mexico, has supported health care, education, and emergency assistance among Indigenous communities, accompanying families with compassion and solidarity.

Bursaries for underprivileged students
Mission Mexico gives a helping hand to students who wish to continue their education and return to their villages with professions and skills that can improve life for all.

Xalpitzahuac Health Project
The project assists people from the Xalpitzahuac region with medical costs and travel to hospitals in cases of dire need.
