About Us

Bishop William T. McGrattan was appointed by Pope Francis to succeed Bishop Frederick Henry as the 8th bishop of the Diocese of Calgary. He was installed on February 27, 2017.

"Bishop McGrattan is a bishop who prioritizes pastoral relationship. And he wants one with each of us. He takes his role as shepherd seriously, but knowing he cannot singlehandedly meet the needs of each of his 400,000 sheep, he is strengthening his relationship with his priests so they can strengthen relationships with their parishioners. But this doesn’t stop here." Read more about our Bishop here

A Message from Bishop McGrattan
Our organizational structure, vision, mission and core strategies clearly define the ministries and services of the Catholic Pastoral Centre. Under the guidance of the Moderator of the Curia, the directors aid me in assessing the needs of the Diocese and in finding new and meaningful ways to work together in revitalizing our parishes and the Diocese.

The Pastoral Centre collaboratively works with the Presbyteral Council, Diocesan Finance Committee and other consultative bodies. We also work with the episcopal vicars, who I have delegated to lead specific areas of ministry. Under the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit, we will respond effectively to the challenges and the opportunities of pastoral ministry in a spirit of authenticity, joy and service to the People of God. We form missionary disciples who will proclaim the good news not only with words but above all in a life transfigured by God’s presence.

God Bless you for your perseverance, grace and continued work in the ministry.

Most Rev. William T. McGrattan, D. D.

The refined logo of the Diocese is an illustration of the stylized coat of arms that is on one of the six panels on the front doors of St. Mary’s Cathedral. The mitre at the top of the shield portrays the Bishop's spiritual authority to govern, sanctify and teach in the Diocese. The two lappets flow down from the back of the mitre surrounding the shield. The shield is inspired by the coat of arms of Alberta and features the beauty of the different landscapes and the natural resources of the Province. The star in the sky and the rays are reminiscent of the Epiphany and of Our Lady, the Patron of the Diocese.  Together, the symbols in the shield show the unity between the natural and the spiritual.
