On September 27, 2021, the Bishops of Canada announced a $30 Million National Financial Pledge target that will be raised over a period of five (5) years. The funds will support local/regional programs and initiatives dedicated to improving the lives of residential school survivors, their families, and their communities.
This commitment to a collective, national financial initiative is one of the resolutions made by the bishops during their plenary assembly from September 20-24, 2021. The fundraising will be conducted at the level of the dioceses or regions where parishes across Canada will be encouraged to participate.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary will coordinate its efforts and initiatives with the national principles, strategy, and timelines. The pastoral plans of the Diocese for programs and initiatives that address the historical and current harm caused by residential schools will be discussed with local Indigenous Leaders and are expected to be communicated in December 2021.
There were 25 residential schools in the Province of Alberta. Four of these operated by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) were within the boundaries of the Diocese. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary did not operate any of the residential schools.
Together as the Diocese of Calgary, we unite our efforts in working with the Indigenous Peoples so that truth, justice, healing, and reconciliation may forge a new path and that all things be made new in Christ.
Thank you for considering this important cause in your financial giving.
